AMC Eyes Mob Of Viewers For ‘Family' Friendly Marathon
AMC is making an offer during the first week of August that most genre fans will find hard to refuse.
The service will bow its inaugural "Mob Week," beginning Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. and running for 130 hours through Aug. 7.
Hosted by real-life mob buster and former New York City Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, AMC will air some of the most critically acclaimed gangster films of all time -- The Godfather, Scarface and Carlito's Way, among others, as well as short-form documentaries detailing various mob activities.
AMC is seeding the stunt through its exclusive basic-cable rights to The Godfather trilogy, as the network struck a deal covering the 2011-19 span with Paramount Pictures last September.
Throughout "Mob Week," Giuliani will discuss his personal love of these classic films, as well as his connection to real-life mobsters. During his time as district attorney for the Southern District of New York, he indicted 11 organized crime figures, including the heads of New York's so-called "Five Families" on charges including extortion, labor racketeering, and murder for hire.
In addition to the features, AMC will showcase segments that will examine the history, impact and real-life costs of the mob, from the inner workings of the Mafia to the reality of being a made man. These shorts will feature interviews with a wide range of mob experts, as well as some of today's most notorious mafia personalities, including Henry Hill, Johnny Fratto, and Sam Gianccana Jr., who attempt to separate truth from fiction in the depiction of the mob and offer a unique perspective on both the films and the headline making events that may have inspired them.
The segments tied to features: "The Family Business," The Godfather; "The Mob Code," The Godfather Part II; "Made For The Mob," Goodfellas; "The Chicago Way," The Untouchables; "Power and Drugs," Scarface; "Divided Loyalties," Donnie Brasco; and "Leaving the Life Behind," Carlito's Way
