Apple TV Now Home to 5K Apps
The new Apple TV, a device launched last fall, now supports more than 5,000 apps, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Monday during an event that’s providing updates on the company’s product lineup.
Apple, Cook said, is also launching a new version of tvOS today that includes some enhanced features, including digital folders that let users organize their content on the devcie, and a “dictation” element that lets customers use their voice (via Siri) to ask for any app available on the platform.
Apple, as expected, also launched a smaller version of its iPhone, the iPhone SE, that sports a four-inch screen.
The new device, which sports 802.11ac WiFi and 4K video support, will start at $399 (16 GB) and rises to $499 for the 64 GB version. It will be free with a two-year contract with supporting carriers, and start at $17 per month without a service contract.
The iPhone SE starts shipping March 31, and will be avaialble to more than 100 countries by May.
The new model arrives after Apple sold a record 74.8 million iPhones in its fiscal Q1, but coupled with concerns that iPhone sales would decline in Q2.
Apple also introduced a new, smaller iPad Pro model with a 9.7-inch retina display and the faster A9X processor. Apple, which introduced the original iPad Pro, sold 16.1 million of the tablets in its fiscal Q1, down from 21.4 million in the year-ago quarter.
