AT&T Breaks Out New On-Screen Weather App

AT&T U-verse TV has rolled out an on-screen app for The Weather Channel that provides instant access to local and national weather information.

AT&T, which developed the app, said viewers can customize the app and obtain a batch of weather data, including hourly and five-day forecasts, weather alerts, and radar maps, for as many as five cities. AT&T offers the app on channels 225 in standard-definition and 1225 in HD.

It’s the latest TV-optimized app to join the U-verse lineup. Others include U-verse TV Multiview (a mosaic presentation of several live TV channels), Karaoke TV, Facebook on TV, and caller ID, and the holiday-themed U-verse Santa Tracker, among others.

U-verse TV also features a separate app called Weather on Demand. AT&T "has no current plans to replace Weather on  Demand," a spokeswoman said.

AT&T ended the third quarter with 5.22 million U-verse TV subscribers.

“The Weather Channel app allows for a personalized experience”, said Mel Coker, chief marketing officer, AT&T Home Solutions, in a statement. “Customers have access to the information they want, when they want it.”

“This interactive application is a great complement to the in-depth coverage of our linear network, which provides comprehensive data interpretation as well as storytelling. We are thrilled to continue the long standing relationship between The Weather Channel and AT&T,” added Jennifer Dangar, The Weather Company’s president of distribution & business development.”
