AT&T To Bring ‘GigaPower’ To Charlotte
AT&T added to its recent spasm of “GigaPower” announcements on Wednesday by revealing that it will roll out its fiber-based, 1-Gig-capable network to parts of Charlotte, N.C., another city that Google Fiber has been eyeing for possible expansion.
AT&T, which competes with Time Warner Cable in Charlotte, didn’t announce when it expects GigaPower deployments to begin there, or say which parts of Charlotte will be reached by the new fiber-based platform first.
AT&T has been busy in North Carolina, where it’s already ratified agreements to deploy GigaPower in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem and Durham.
AT&T has launched GigaPower services in parts of Austin, Texas, and expects to start deployments in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area later this summer.
AT&T has also committed to roll out the fiber-only network to parts of San Antonio, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; and is exploring an expansion of GigaPower to as many as 100 additional cities across 25 markets. In North Carolina, it’s also considering GigaPower expansions in
Apex, Garner, Gastonia, Greensboro, Huntersville, and Morrisville.
AT&T has proposed to expand GigaPower to an additional 2 million customers as a condition of its pending acquisition of DirecTV.
