Cablers Put In Funding Call for VoIP

More evidence that cable operators are increasingly interested in voice over
Internet protocol can be found in a funding announcement for a California
soft-switch-technology provider.

Syndeo Corp. announced that its third round of funding netted $75 million
from a raft of cable heavyweights, including lead investor Comcast Interactive
Capital and IUGO Ventures Inc.

Also along for the funding ride are AOL Time Warner Inc., Cox Communications
Inc., Rogers Cable Inc., Shaw Cablesystems G.P., Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and YAS
Broadband Ventures LLC.

Syndeo's 'Syon 426' combination soft switch and call-management server is
PacketCable-compliant and can replace standard constant-bit-rate class-5
switches for voice traffic.

It can also support regulated features such as emergency 911 systems,
operator services and carrier preselect options. In addition, it can support 25
voice features

'We are thrilled with the level of participation from the cable operators and
other strategic investors,' Syndeo CEO Ted Griggs said in a release. 'These
investors are affiliated with five of the eight largest remaining MSOs, passing
approximately 70 percent of all homes in the United States and
Canada.'
