CBS All Access Tunes Up Android TV App
CBS said it has extended support for CBS All Access, its digital VOD and live streaming service, to Google’s new Android TV platform for streaming devices and smart TVs.
CBS All Access, a service that runs $5.99 per month and provides access to live TV streams in 85 U.S. markets, is also offered on Android and iOS devices, via Web browsers at CBS.com , Roku players and integrated Roku TVs, and the Google Chromecast. CBS said it will extend support to more platforms in the coming months.
Android TV is being offered on a range of smart TVs from Sony, Sharp and Philips, as well as streaming players such as Google's Nexus Player (pictured), the Razer Forge TV, and the 4K-capable Nvidia Shield.
“We’ve seen a tremendous response from users on the connected device and mobile platforms we’ve brought the CBS All Access service to thus far,” said Marc DeBevoise, EVP and GM, CBS Digital Media, in a statement. “In fact, subscribers are watching two times the amount of CBS content as non-subscribers on digital platforms. Bringing the service to Android TV gives viewers more flexibility and access to CBS’s world-class programming on whichever platform they choose.”
CBS launched the OTT subscription service in October 2014, but has not released subscriber figures.
In addition to delivering live streams in the more than 80 markets, CBS said the service now features full current season of 19 primetime shows, including NCIS, Scorpion and The Good Wife, the day after they air; full past seasons of 10 major current series, and more than 6,000 episodes of CBS “classics” free of ads, including Star Trek, Cheers, Frasier and CSI: Miami.
