CES: Technicolor's MediaPlay Set-Top Built for Comcast's RDK
Las Vegas -- Technicolor is developing a next-generation video set-top based Comcast’s Reference Design Kit, designed to act as a client to home media gateways.
Earlier this week, Arris Group and Pace also announced RDK-based set-tops and gateways designed for Comcast’s Xfinity X1 service. Technicolor’s MediaPlay set-top box, when used in conjunction with a multituner gateway, will deliver IP video to any screen in the home.
The RDK software stack, which is based on CableLabs’ OpenCable Application Platform spec, is designed to let manufacturers and MSOs more rapidly get new set-tops and gateways to market. Comcast’s senior vice president of premises technology Steve Reynolds, who is spearheading the RDK initiative, said in a statement, “The collaboration between Entropic, Technicolor and Comcast’s RDK development teams will help enable the development of powerful client devices within highly competitive schedules.”
The Technicolor MediaPlay client solution is based on Entropic Communications’ TSC188 processor, which provides more than 5,000 DMIPS with a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 core architecture. The box supports home networking via MoCA 1.1 silicon, DTCP-IP technology and multiple Digital Rights Management (DRM) to offer full content security over MoCA home networks. It also supports 3D video and graphics to render advanced interfaces based on HTML5 or Adobe Flash.
Also at CES, Technicolor is showing off Qeo, a software framework that the company said provides interoperability among devices and applications across all brands and ecosystems. The Qeo software can make devices, applications and over-the-top cloud solutions share content and communicate.
