Cinelatino Picks Up Exclusive TV Rights to 'Colosio'
Spanish-language premium movie channel Cinelatino has picked up exclusive TV rights to Colosio, el asesinato, the highest-grossing Mexican film of 2012.
Terms for purchase of the highly controversial political thriller were not disclosed.
Directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Carlos Bolado, Colosio narrates the 1994 public assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio, the front-running presidential candidate, a few months before the election he was certain to win.
The film premiered in Mexico last summer, just days before the election of yet another candidate from Mexico’s PRI party, President Enrique Peña-Nieto.
Colosio quickly became a box-office success, netting an estimated $4.4 million and attracting over 1 million people, who saw it in 450 screens nationwide.
For Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the U.S., Cinelatino will be the first and only place to see Colosio, which was unable to secure U.S. theatrical distribution.
The movie stars Daniel Gimenez Cacho, and Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress who helped Telemundo break ratings records with her performance in the Emmy-nominated telenovela La Reina del Sur.
