DirecTV Adds ViendoMovies
Somos TV-owned Spanish-language, commercial-free pay TV movie channel ViendoMovies has been added to the DirecTV channel lineup — giving the seven-year-old network access to the growing number of Latinos who have chosen the satellite-TV provider over cable television services.
"With this entry on DirecTV, ViendoMovies now reaches a high number of subscribers across the nation,” Somos TV CEO Luis Villanueva said. “This, of course, is a pivotal step to increase the distribution, awareness and reach of our channel. We are very happy to be able to show DirecTV subscribers ViendoMovies, making our channel a leading player in the Latino pay TV landscape.”
Villanueva added that the addition of ViendoMovies on the DirecTV lineup will result in “significant growth” for both parties.
The ViendoMovies lineup is dedicated to contemporary theatrical films from across Iberoamérica, including Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Chile and Venezuela, across all genres. ViendoMovies airs about 250 films each month, continuously updating and managing its library.
ViendoMovies launched in 2006 as VeneMovies as one of the first channels serving U.S. Hispanics to exclusively feature commercial-free Spanish-language films. The network changed its name in 2011 to distance itself from its Venezuelan origins.
Until now, distribution of ViendoMovies was limited to key cable operators such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, and New York-area MSO Cablevision Systems. Telcos AT&T and Verizon Communications have also carried ViendoMovies.
According to DirecTV data released in April 2011, DirecTV reaches 2.4 million Hispanic consumers, or slightly more than 10% of its total U.S. customer base.
