DirecTV’s Hartenstein to Retire
DirecTV Group Inc. vice chairman Eddy Hartenstein, who grew the satellite company into a pay TV powerhouse, announced his retirement Thursday, effective Dec. 31.
Hartenstein, who became company president in 1990 at its creation, is stepping down to coincide with the one-year anniversary of News Corp.’s takeover of the company.
“The highlight of my career has been these past 15 years while we conceived and brought to reality the best experience in television, which today is viewed in one of every eight television homes across America,” Hartenstein said in a prepared statement.
DirecTV has 13.5 million subscribers.
Both DirecTV chairman Rupert Murdoch and CEO Chase Carey issued statements lauding Hartenstein’s long career with the company.
