Discovery, AOL Seek ‘Greatest American’

Discovery Channel and America Online Inc. want to know who you think is the “Greatest American” of all-time.

The cable network and the Internet-service provider have teamed up on a campaign that combines original television and online programming with interactive online features, the two companies announced Wednesday.

Viewers and surfers can submit nominations and vote through AOL.com (www.aol.com/greatestamerican) or at AOL Keyword: Greatest American.

A Discovery series beginning in May will highlight the top vote-getters and ultimately reveal the person named as the "Greatest American."

"This opportunity is providing both of our companies with a perfect partnership," Discovery Channel executive vice president and general manager Jane Root said in a prepared statement.

"AOL is the world's leader in interactive services and Internet technologies, and Discovery Channel is America's largest cable network,” she added. “Together, we can tap into each other's strengths for an inventive series sure to generate sustained interest and participation."

“This collaboration with Discovery Channel aligns perfectly with our goal to provide compelling original online content, while also offering a forum where Americans can make their voices heard,” AOL executive VP of programming, properties and productions Jim Bankoff said in a prepared statement.
