Discovery Hopes to See Stars
Discovery Communications Inc. is teaming up with the Lowell Observatory to build a $30 million telescope, AP reports.
The telescope will be installed in the Coconino National Forest, located about 40 miles southeast of Flagstaff, Ariz.
It is expected to weigh about 70 tons and have a main dish of 14 feet in diameter, which would make it the fifth-largest operational telescope in the United States.
Some $20 million has been raised so far.
DCI chairman John Hendricks -- who has served on the Lowell Observatory advisory board for the past decade -- announced a $10 million contribution from DCI, as well as a $1 million personal donation from he and his wife, Maureen.
