Dish Promotes Low-Price PVR
By MONICA HOGAN
published EchoStar Communications Corp. said Tuesday that it would offer its new
direct-broadcast satellite receiver with built-in personal video recorder, the
'DishPVR 501,' for the promotional price of $200 to new Dish Network subscribers
through May 31.
New customers must commit to one year of programming at $39.98 per month to
take advantage of the price discount. The hardware typically costs $399,
including the antenna.
The company also confirmed that it would not charge a monthly subscription
fee for the PVR functionality, as competitors TiVo Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s
UltimateTV do.
Beginning May 1, new Dish customers will also be able to lease DishPVR 501
hardware.
