Longtime Showtime Networks executive Matthew Duda is retiring.
Duda, currently serving as executive vice president, program acquisitions, planning and distribution, will leave Showtime after 31 years. During his time at the pay TV programmer, Duda oversaw the acquisition of feature films, documentaries, and specials for Showtime Networks Inc. and all of its platforms.
He is credited for crafting innovative deal structures and managing output arrangements with major studios, including DreamWorks, Paramount, Disney, New Line, MGM, Lionsgate, Summit Entertainment, Miramax, CBS Films and The Weinstein Co.
"For over thirty years, Matthew has been one of the leading voices in our programming group," said Matt Blank, chairman and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc. in a statement. "His contributions have been immeasurable, and he will be missed both personally and professionally by all those who have worked with him at Showtime."
A Harvard graduate, Duda started his Showtime career at The Movie Channel in July 1981.Over the years, he worked as the premium programmer's lead negotiator in numerous multi-year exclusive pacts for first run-films and oversaw an acquisitions team responsible for the licensing of thousands of independent films, studio library films, documentaries, and other product.
Duda also played a pivotal role in launching the Sundance Channel in 1996. He was integral in working with the Sundance Institute, and oversaw the acquisition of independent and art-house product for that channel until it was acquired by Rainbow Media (now AMC Networks) in 2008.
In 2004, Duda added distribution responsibilities to his duties. As Showtime pushed further into the original series business, Duda had oversight for the sales of Showtime-owned programming in the international marketplace, as well as the domestic ancillary markets of TV and home video.
"I have nothing but admiration for the career Matthew has had at Showtime," said David Nevins, president of Entertainment, Showtime Networks. "He is a person of talent and integrity, and a true expert in his field. I will forever be grateful for all that he has taught me since I joined the company."
