New York -- ESPN won six Sports Emmy Awards (including one for ESPN2) and Home Box Office captured five statuettes at a ceremony here Monday night.
Turner Network Television and NFL Network also won a Sports Emmy each, as determined by a National Television Academy panel.
ESPN’s SportsCenter won for top Studio Show (Daily) and a SportsCenter piece on runner Ben Comen earned an Emmy for Long Feature. ESPN baseball analyst Joe Morgan won in the Event Analyst category. The ESPN-owned Great Outdoor Games won a second straight Emmy for Live Event Audio/Sound; Dick Enberg’s Wimbledon Reflections won The Dick Schaap Writing Award; and ESPN25 won for Graphic Design.
Chet Simmons, an ABC Sports executive in its earliest days and ESPN’s president from 1979 to 1982, received the Sports Emmy for Lifetime Achievement. ABC Sports racked up three Emmys, as well.
At HBO, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel won two Emmys, for Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthology and Outstanding Sports Journalism; Inside the NFL won for Outstanding Studio Show (Weekly); Cris Collinsworth was named Outstanding Sports Personality (Studio Analyst) and the documentary Nine Innings From Ground Zerowon an Emmy for its music.
In a sixth Emmy category, Bob Costas, of HBO and NBC, was named Outstanding Sports Personality (Studio Host).
TNT’s NBA on TNT Thursdays won an Emmy in the category Outstanding Post-Produced Audio/Sound for the opening game, the All-Star Game and “Trick Daddy Teases.”
NFL Films on NFL Network won an Emmy for Outstanding Editing.
