Genband Floats Communications Apps Into the Cloud
Communications infrastructure vendor Genband is launching NUViA, a suite of white-label hosted applications for cable and telco operators that includes videoconferencing, WebEx-like collaboration, HD voice and multimedia messaging.
Genband says its cable customers include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems, Liberty Global and Virgin Media. The company did not identify which service providers have been testing out NUViA.
According to the company, NUViA offers service providers the advantages of hosted services, such as a “pay-as-you-grow” business model and the ability to relatively quickly extend their service footprint. The NUViA Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) offering includes HD voice, video, multimedia messaging, mobility, conferencing, Web collaboration, desktop clients and fixed and mobile convergence.
Genband has partnered with Citrix’s GoToMeeting to offer the Web-based collaboration portion of the NUViA suite. The company is hosting the NUViA services internally at first and is deciding among several potential data center partners going forward, including Verizon Communications’ Terremark and CenturyLink’s Savvis, executives said.
“NUViA offers service providers a radically different model for deploying communications services from what is available today,” Jeff Townley, president of Genband’s services business unit and global operations, said in a statement.
Frisco, Texas-based Genband acquired Cedar Point Communications, a VoIP systems provider targeting cable operators, in 2010. According to industry sources, privately held Genband's mostly stock deal for Cedar Point was worth less than $20 million.
Also Tuesday, Genband announced its "Making Networks Smarter" marketing tagline. The company positions its product portfolio under three "strategic solution pillars": smart core (the Genband CONTiNUUM line), smart edge (QUANTiX) and smart experience (EXPERiUS).
