Green Is Keen Across NBCU's Portfolio This Week
At NBC Universal, it's time to really focus on the green. Not so much the kind that puts corporations in the black, but rather on ecological and environmental fronts.
The programmer launched annual "Green Week," as part of its ongoing environmental initiative, "Green is Universal," which started in 2007. Throughout the year, NBCU uses it numerous media and entertainment platforms to educate the public on the environment, with over 200 hours of green-themed content airing across over 40 NBCU brands.
NBC's Football Night in America will hit the "green light switch," triggering over 40 television and digital platforms across the company to feature environmentally themed programming. Complete programming details for the week can be found at: http://www.greenisuniversal.com/programming/.
This year will showcase NBC News reports from every corner of the company's portfolio. MSNBC's Morning Joe will showcase a special five-day series to educate America on dependence on foreign oil and alternative sources of energy, while NBC Nightly News's environmental correspondent Anne Thompson will host environmental segments throughout the week.
NBC's Today will bring it home with a segment on green cleaning products and highlights on how to reduce home energy and water use, as NBC local stations across the country will feature stories about green in their communities. Moreover,
NBC News' Brian Williams will conduct an exclusive one-on-one interview on Nov. 19 with Prince Charles, who talks about his efforts to prevent global warming and why he wants to be "the defender of nature." The interview will lead into the television premiere of Harmony, Prince Charles's new environmental documentary.
There will also be a new slate of green-themed PSAs under "The More You Know" umbrella. Messages will come Jackie Warner from Bravo's Thintervention, Matt Bomer from USA's White Collar, Josh Gates from Syfy's Destination Truth, Mel B. from Oxygen's Dance Your A** Off, CNBC's Maria Bartiromo and Jason Ritter from NBC's The Event. Topics encompass ways to reduce energy usage, lower fuel consumption and recycle unwanted items.
NBCU will also hold its first ever employee "Eco Fair" in 30 Rockefeller Plaza's Saturday Night Live studio (8H), where staffers will have the opportunity to learn to cook healthy recipes with LXTV's Sara Gore and how to green their home with LXTV's George Oliphant. Employees' can also bring in their personal electronics as part of a company recycling effort and convert their old denim jeans into garden planters that will be donated to school rooftop gardens throughout the city. Local farmers and artisans will be on hand, selling their organic and sustainable wares.
Universal Orlando Resort held a similar Green Fest event at Universal CityWalk on Nov. 13, as park vendors and partners, including Starbuck's, Nestle Waters and Coca-Cola, showcased their respective environmental products and programs to guests.
