Harmonic Debuts HD Encoder
By Matt Stump
published Harmonic Inc. debuted a new MPEG-2 (Moving Picture Expert Group) HD encoder that handles both constant-bit-rate and variable-bit-rate encoding schemes.
Harmonic said the new “MV500” encoder offers a 25% improvement in compression efficiency over older products. It integrates the company’s “DiviTrackIP” distributed statistical-multiplexing system.
The company said cable operators can use the variable-bit-rate compression scheme to squeeze more HD channels into their plant, estimating that an operator could get four HD channels in a single 256-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) channel.
Harmonic also debuted the “MV60” encoder for the mobile-video market.
