Home Box Office has approved a second season of Depression-era series Carnivale.
Production on the 13-episode second season -- which follows a carnival troupe and the forces of good and evil during the Dust Bowl epoch -- is expected to begin next spring, with new installments premiering sometime late next year.
Carnivale’s Sept. 14 debut drew 5.3 million viewers, the most for a series bow in HBO history. Viewing for subsequent episodes declined from that level, as its Nov. 30 first-season finale attracted some 3.5 million watchers.
