DirecTV Inc. parent Hughes Electronics Corp. is switching gears with plans for some of its new satellites.
Hughes said Tuesday that satellites originally targeted toward its Spaceway high-speed-data service will now be used to provide additional bandwidth for advanced television services.
The move means the direct-broadcast satellite provider is focusing on services such as local television channels in HDTV format, rather than on consumer Internet access.
