Intel Joins MoCA Consortium
The Multimedia over Coax Alliance announced that Intel has joined the industry consortium as a contributor member.
MoCA creates specifications for distributing digital video and entertainment over existing coaxial cable in the home, and certifies products that meet the MoCA specs. Other members include Comcast, Cox Communications, Verizon Communications, Motorola, Entropic Communications and Panasonic.
“Intel has been instrumental in driving the development and establishment of standards in home connectivity,” MoCA president Charles Cerino said, in a statement. “Their membership further demonstrates MoCA's growth as the smart way to distribute high definition video in and around the home.”
Cerino is vice president of new services technology for Comcast’s New Media Development unit.
Intel recently stepped up its cable-focused development efforts, announcing in June that it has licensed CableLabs’ OpenCable Platform and would incorporate the two-way cable technology into future products. As part of that announcement, Comcast chief technology officer Tony Werner said the operator is “committed to working with Intel to bring one or more Intel [system-on-a-chip]-based digital set-top boxes to market in the next two years.”
