John R. Barrington, 92, a former speechwriter, journalist and cable pioneer, died July 28 in Lyons, N.Y.
A U.S . Army combat veteran of World War II, Barrington was a sportswriter for the New York Herald Tribune and the International News Service, heading the U.S. delegation of journalists at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Australia.
He later became a major public-relations executive and speechwriter for the cable industry, including stints at TelePrompTer and Home Box Office.
He returned to his journalism roots after retirement, writing a seniors column for the Daily Messenger newspaper in Canandaigua, N.Y. well into his 80s.
Barrington is survived by three children, John P. (Anne) Barrington, Richard G. (Diane) Barrington, and Anne F. Barrington; three grandchildren, John, Edmund and Thomas; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Lilian Angela Barrington in 2004.
