Katy Perry, Adele and Taylor Swift's favorite artist Kanye West scored the most nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
Perry set the pace with nine VMA nods, including video of the year and best female video for "Firework," best pop video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" and best special effects for this year's top-selling digital song in the U.S., "E.T.", which features West.
Speaking of Kanye, the man who intruded upon Swift's acceptance speech for best female video award during the 2009 VMAs, garnered a total of seven nods for such notables as All of the Lights and Power.
Buoyed by 21, this year's biggest-selling album thus far in 2011, Adele matched West with seven nominations of her own for soulful hit, Rolling in the Deep.
MTV, which averaged a 10.0 rating among its broad 12-to-34 rating demo and 11.4 million viewers with the last year's show, the best for the network since the 2002 VMAs, will televise the 2011 VMAs from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on August 28 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
Elsewhere, singer/songwriter Bruno Mars is up for four Moonman awards, while Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Thirty Seconds To Mars counted three apiece. Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Lil Wayne, as well as first-time VMA nominees, Tyler, The Creator, Foster the People and Manchester Orchestra are all up for a pair of Moonmen.
Beginning July 20 at 11 p.m. (ET), viewers can vote for general VMA categories, including best new artist, by visiting vma.mtv.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, best new Aatist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues through the show, live on August 28. Verizon subscribers can vote on all categories via SMS by texting VMA to 66333 (standard message rates apply.)
