Liberty Shakes Up OpenTV
Liberty Broadband Interactive Television Inc. CEO Pete Boylan apparently installed some of his former Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. colleagues to top posts at OpenTV Corp., which is controlled by Liberty.
Craig Waggy replaces Scott Ray as OpenTV's chief financial officer, and Mark Allen, another Gemstar veteran, replaces Jesse Berg as general counsel. Scott Doyle -- who led ACTV Inc.'s unsuccessful patent suit against The Walt Disney Co. -- was named OpenTV's chief intellectual property officer.
Waggy, Allen and Doyle will continue to hold their respective posts at LBIT -- CFO; executive vice president of corporate development; and senior VP, chief IP officer.
OpenTV also promoted Matthew Disco to senior VP and deputy general counsel, and Mark Meagher was promoted to senior VP of finance and administration.
In other OpenTV news, third-quarter revenue plummeted to $13.3 million from $25.1 million during the same period last year.
OpenTV took a $539 million impairment charge. That widened its loss to $563.1 million ($7.81 per share) from $118.5 million ($1.71) last year.
The quarter wasn't any better at ACTV, which OpenTV plans to acquire. Its third-quarter net loss widened to $23.3 million ($0.42 per share) from $9.6 million ($0.17) this time last year.
