Former cable executive Jeffrey Marcus has cut short his diplomatic career.
On Aug. 1, Marcus was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as ambassador to Belgium. But he resigned the prestigious post Sept. 26.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Marcus turned in his resignation when his wife of 29 years, Nancy, filed for divorce three days before he was sworn in Sept. 22.
"I deeply regret that I will not be able to serve as ambassador to Belgium. I had looked forward to working with the Belgians to turn the page on what has been a difficult time in our relationship," Marcus said in a statement released by his office.
"Things had been going better, and I was committed to bringing the relationship full circle and restoring it to its rightful place," he added. "However, family comes first."
Marcus started Marcus Cable, which he eventually sold in 1998 to Microsoft Corp. billionaire Paul Allen for $3.3 billion.
In a federal financial disclosure associated with his Senate confirmation, Marcus placed his worth at between $70 million-$247 million. He is currently chairman and CEO of J&N Ventures Inc. He also has minority stakes in the Dallas Stars National Hockey League team and the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball club.
