Mayweather To Fight Maidana In Rematch Of May PPV Fight
Pound for pound pay-per-view boxing champion Floyd Mayweather will mix it up again with tough welterweight contender Marcos Maidana in a Sept. 13 PPV event, the fighter announced on Twitter Thursday.
In a tweet earlier today, Mayweather simply announced that the rematch will take place Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Showtime PPV is slated to distribute the fight, according to Mayweather.
The first bout between the two fighters on May 3 was more competitive than most observers expected, with Maidana putting constant pressure on the undefeated welterweight champion. Mayweather eventually won a majority decision.
Showtime did not release PPV buys for the Mayweather-Maidana bout, but published reports put the fight at 900,000 buys.
The fight will mark Mayweather's fourth fight of a six-fight deal with Showtime. “On May 3, the fearless Marcos Maidana attacked Floyd Mayweather with reckless abandon, landing more punches than any previous Mayweather opponent and giving Mayweather one of the toughest fights of his career," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Showtime Sports in a statement. "That peformance earned Maidana this rematch, and we are in for another electrifying night of boxing.”
