MSGN Inks Red Bulls' Renewal
Maintaining its longstanding relationship with the New York Red Bulls, MSG Networks has reached a multiyear rights extension with the Major League Soccer franchise.
MSG Networks, which has been the New York area television home of the Red Bulls -- previously known as the Metro Stars -- since MLS’s inception in 1996, will telecast 22 of the club’s 34 regular-season matches this season, including pregame and postgame coverage.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Red Bulls kicks off their 2014 campaign on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m., when they visit the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. on MSG 2 with a 30-minute pregame show. Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Steve Cangialosi will mark his seventh season as the team’s play-by-play announcer and 13th season covering the squad, while former New York and Olympic goalkeeper Shep Messing starts his 14th season as game analyst. Host and sideline reporter Tina Cervasio will be back for her seventh season covering the Red Bulls.
New York’s remaining 12 regular season matches will be exclusively shown by MLS national partners ESPN Networks (two on ESPN, four on ESPN2) and the NBC Sports Group (five on NBCSN, one on NBC). In addition, UniMas and Univision will telecast four matches and one match, respectively, in Spanish (MSG Networks will telecast those games simultaneously in English).
“The Red Bulls organization has been a great partner for 18 years and we are proud to continue that relationship,” said Daniel Ronayne, executive vice president and general manager, MSG Networks. “We look forward to providing New York soccer fans with exclusive local coverage of the Red Bulls.”
Noted Red Bulls CFO Luis Miguel Garcia: “We are delighted to have come to an agreement with MSG Networks. MSG’s brand is synonymous with New York sports and they have been a terrific partner for our club and the sport of soccer since the beginning of MLS. We believe the quality of their coverage is among the best in the League.”
