MTV Leads POP Awards Nominations
MTV: Music Television, Black Entertainment Television and Discovery Health
Channel lead the nominations for the second annual "Positively Outstanding
Programming Awards."
Presented by TV Guide, Cable Positive's POP Awards recognize and honor
exceptional original HIV/AIDS-related cable-network programming.
The winners will be named at Cable Positive's POP Awards ceremony Feb. 25 at
The Supper Club in New York.
MTV had five nominations, while BET and Discovery Health garnered three
apiece in the five categories that were announced Friday. Cable Positive said
nominees for the POP network of the year and POP celebrity of the year will be
announced shortly.
The nominees in the outstanding original-series episode/story-line category
are
A&E Network's 100 Centre Street, Showtime's Queer as Folk
and Lifetime Television's Strong Medicine.
MTV was nominated twice for outstanding documentary with Dangerous
Liaisons and Sex, School and Scandal, while Discovery Health got the
nod for AIDS at 21.

BET had two outstanding newsmagazine entries for Teen Summit: HIV, Sex,
& Me and BET Tonight with Ed Gordon: National HIV Testing
Day.
Discovery Health is in the running with Berman & Berman: For Women
Only - "Infections + STDs".
Discovery Health, MTV and Lifetime have been tabbed for outstanding
biographical program with Born with HIV: Little Warriors, Diary of
Bono and Chris Tucker: AidingAfrica and Intimate Portrait:
Elizabeth Taylor, respectively.
And for outstanding special programming, the nominees are BET's 106 &
Park: World AIDS Day Special and MTV, for its 'Fight for Your Rights'
public-service announcements and its First National Sex Quiz.
Meanwhile, MTV's Staying Alive Concert will receive a "Special Jury
POP Award." The program consisted of two concerts -- one in South Africa, the
other in the United States -- that were combined into a commercial-free
90-minute special addressing the importance of protection and testing and the
stigma surrounding those living with HIV/AIDS.
The program -- featuring P. Diddy, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews, Missy Elliot
and Michelle Branch, as well as messages from Nelson Mandela, Halle Berry and
Magic Johnson -- aired in more than 88 countries.
