Oxygen Balances Serious Fare with Tori
Pasadena, Calif. -- New programming coming up in March on Oxygen ranges from the deathly serious (Who Cares About Girls?)to the frivolous (a reality series about Tori Spelling and her new husband, Dean McDermott).
Documentaries will explore how the world treats girls, exposing child slavery and the impact of incarcerated mothers on their young children. The host will be Lisa Ling, who was brought into the project by Oxygen investor Oprah Winfrey. At Oxygen's Television Critics Association Tour presentation here, Ling said she begged to be a part of the project when she learned its focus.
Mothers in Prison-And the Daughters Left Behind will be the first show to debut March 25, and an hour called Hidden Away: Slave Girls of India will be shown in late spring. Other hours on the theme are planned this year, too.
Spelling and McDermott said they will have to break the reality couple jinx (Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra) to become the first couple profiled who remain married.
Tori & Dean: Inn Love will follow the couple as they invest Spelling's inheritance from her late father, producer Aaron Spelling, by buying an eight-acre bed-and-breakfast in Temecula, Calif. Footage also includes coverage of the couple's recent garage sale (items for bid included Spelling's collection of purloined hotel ashtrays, but not jackets dubbed "matronly" by McDermott. "That's CHANEL," a horrified Spelling retorts.).
The reality series will begin March 21.
