Sci Fi Flies Spanish Battlestar for CIC

Looking to gain wider appeal among Latino viewers, Sci Fi Channel will provide what it is calling a basic-cable first: Its upcoming Battlestar Galactica miniseries will become the first original drama available in closed-captioned Spanish.

The miniseries -- starring Edward James Olmos and premiering Dec. 8 and 9 at 9 p.m. (EST) -- will also be the subject of a special creative half-hour program for Cable in the Classroom. Olmos will narrate the documentary in both English and Spanish for CIC, which will make the show available Mondays at 5:30 a.m. EST/PST Nov. 17-Dec. 29 on Sci Fi’s Web site (www.scifi.com/cableintheclassroom).

Sci Fi’s special -- which marks the first time a non-Spanish network has broadcast in Spanish for CIC -- will be supplemented by curriculum materials generated by the service for high-school students and teachers.

The Battlestar Galactica presentation will explore media literacy, satire and film criticism through the prism of science fiction.
