The cable industry’s technical intelligentsia descend on San Antonio this week for the Society of Cable Television Engineers Cable-Tec Expo, set for June 14-17 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
The SCTE expects more than 10,000 attendees and has sold out 128,300 square feet of exhibit space to 375 vendors, including 69 first-time companies.
The agenda is broken down into a host of major categories, including bandwidth management, commercial services, customer-premises equipment, digital networks, home networking, Internet-protocol implementations, triple play for smaller operators, network security, preventive maintenance, voice-over-Internet protocol/PacketCable and wireless technology.
The convention kicks off June 15 with an opening panel featuring Glenn Britt, chairman and CEO of Time Warner Cable; Robert Stanzione, chairman and CEO of Arris Group Inc. and, via satellite, John Chambers, the CEO of Cisco Systems Inc.
That CEO roundtable will be followed by a CTO panel featuring Mike Hayashi, senior vice president of advanced engineering and subscriber technology for Time Warner Cable; Dr. Richard Prodan, chief technology officer at Broadcom Corp.; Tony Werner, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Liberty Media Corp.; and Paul Woidke, vice president of technology at Comcast Spotlight.
Attendees will hear a key update on OCAP to close the show on Friday, June 17, with a panel moderated by Jim Braun, Time Warner Cable’s general vice president, strategy and development. The panel will feature Walter Michel, Comcast’s senior director, platform and application engineering, video/media engineering; George Sarosi, principal software architect for Time Warner, and Craig Smithpeters, manager, advanced technology and standards of Cox Communications Inc.
Other convention highlights will include a series of papers on digital simulcast, including those submitted by Basil Badawiyeh, manager of advanced video engineering and development, Adelphia Communications, and Michael Adams, vice president of architecture and technology at Terayon Communication Systems Inc.
Paul Brooks, senior network architect in Time Warner’s advanced technology group, will present a paper on the MSO’s switched digital broadcast field-trial results.
