TCA Winter 2013: OWN Sets Tyler Perry Series
OWN in May will debut the first two original series from actor/producer Tyler Perry as part the network’s 2013 programming schedule, according to network officials.
The two series, the first of the network’s multi-year production deal with Perry, include The Haves and the Have Nots, a drama series following the exploits of an affluent family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper; and Love Thy Neighbor, a comedy set in a diner, the network announced prior to its TCA presentation Saturday.
Other original series on tap for the network include Blackboard Wars, which centers on the dramatic transformation of New Orleans’ John McDonogh High; Golden Sisters, which follows the lives of three sisters made famous by a web video catching them watching a celebrity sex tape; Raising Whitley, a docu-series following actress and comedienne Kym Witley; and Dogfellas, which follows a former mofia enforcer who rescues stray dogs.
“All of these new programs reflect the best of the human spirit …from the funny to the dramatic, we are always shooting for to-the-bone real,” said Sheri Salata, president, OWN in a statement. “Whether it’s Oprah’s in-depth conversations with celebrities and newsmakers, or our new scripted programming from Tyler Perry, the people and characters in these shows share experiences and life stories in relatable and authentic ways.”
