Time Warner Cable officially opened its $85 million National Data Center East on its Charlotte, N.C., campus, a facility that houses the MSO’s email servers, billing systems and back-end applications used across the entire company.
TWC announced plans for the 178,000-square-foot, two-story data center last summer as part of a $101 million expansion project, under which a second, 103,500-square-foot facility is expected to open in 2013.
The National Data Center East includes about 1,600 data center racks and is strung with 1.3 million feet of cabling, hosting the applications that support approximately 70 million residential emails sent per day among other servers. Time Warner Cable’s other national data center is in Centennial, Colo.
"Locating one of just two national data centers in Charlotte emphasizes TWC’s commitment to the Charlotte area and a commitment to provide the latest and best technology to our customers," Carol Hevey, executive vice president of operations for Time Warner Cable East, said in a statement.
The Charlotte building also houses equipment from NaviSite, a cloud-hosting company Time Warner Cable acquired last year.
Last year Time Warner Cable also announced the addition of 225 new jobs with the construction of the new facility -- all of which have been filled. According to TWC, with the addition of those jobs, Charlotte now represents the company’s largest corporate campus. About 7,900 employees work across the Carolinas region.
Time Warner Cable’s Carolinas division serves more than 2.1 million residential and business customers across 400 cities and towns across North and South Carolina.
