Upfronts 2014: Animal Planet Announces New Series
Animal Planet announced six new series and a handful of specials that will be added to its lineup.
New series include Deadly Islands, which features predator expert Dave Salmoni visiting remote islands, and Ice Lake Rebels, which follows survivalists in the Northwest Territories. Anthony Archer-Willis will appear as the host of Pool Master, which pairs the designer with clients looking to construct pools. Additional new series include Redwood Kings, Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters and My Tiny Terror.
The network has also partnered with NGO WildAid and former NBA player Yao Ming for The Yao Ming Project, a special that will highlight the worldwide crisis of elephant poaching and trafficking.
The network’s plans for scripted content include a feature adaptation of Moby Dick, with Martin Sheen playing Old Thomas Nickerson.
“We always are exploring new stories that both entertain and challenge how we view the natural world and our place in it. Whether captivating audiences season after season with the network’s most-watched show River monsters, killing it with cuteness with our most buzzed-about, most successful Puppy Bowl ever or delving deep into our humanity with powerful series like Pit Bulls & Parolees, Animal Planet remains committed to offering provocative, entertaining programming while shedding even more light on important global issues,” said Marjorie Kaplan, Group President Animal Planet and TLC.
