USA Network's 'Characters Unite' Initiative Sparkles with Golden Beacon Award

The Association of Cable Communicators awarded its 2013 Golden Beacon Award to USA Network’s "Characters Unite" initiative.

The ACC Thursday night bestowed the Golden Beacon, the group’s highest honor, to USA and presented 39 Beacon Awards -- representing work by MSOs, cable systems, programming networks, and cable associations in categories such as community relations, public service announcements and social media communications -- during a dinner ceremony at its annual conference, Forum 2013, which is being held from May 8-10 in Washington, D.C.

Selected by members through an extensive judging process, ACC awards its Golden Beacon to a communications or public affairs initiative that has made an impact within the cable industry and enhanced cable’s image nationwide.

Characters Unite is USA’s public service campaign dedicated to combating hate and discrimination, while promoting diversity and acceptance. In partnership with leading nonprofit organizations, the multiplatform initiative focuses on a wide range of civil and human rights issues, including racism, hate crimes, bullying, access for people with disabilities, gender discrimination, homophobia and religious intolerance. While a year-round endeavor, USA designates February as Characters Unite Month. This year, the network augmented the month-long effort with more on-air programming, digital content and special community events than it had ever done before.

“Across the nation cable communicators promote their company’s products, contribute to the bottom line and improve the quality of life in the communities their companies serve,” said Pete Abel, 2013 Beacon Awards chair and senior vice president, corporate communications, Suddenlink, in a statement. “The Beacon Awards celebrate the very significant role cable communicators play in our industry’s success and recognize the best of those efforts.”
