SMC Networks used Intel's DOCSIS 3.0 chips and Entropic Communications' Multimedia over Coax Alliance 2.0 solution to create an IP-based cable gateway that can support more than 400 Megabits per second over in-home coaxial cabling for multiroom DVR and other applications.
MoCA 2.0 delivers more than 400 Mbps of application throughput, compared with a maximum of 175 Mbps with the MoCA 1.1 spec.
The solution -- which would represent one of the first MoCA 2.0 products on the market -- comprises SMC's DOCSIS 3.0 gateway platform, Entropic's complete MoCA 2.0 silicon and software solution, and Intel's Puma 5 family of Linux-based DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem system-on-a-chip solution. Intel acquired Texas Instruments' DOCSIS silicon business last year.
The companies showed the DOCSIS gateway with MoCA 2.0 silicon at CableLabs' Summer Conference 2011, being held Aug. 7-10, in Keystone, Colo. Only CableLabs members and select vendors are allowed to attend the event.
SMC Networks, based in Irvine, Calif., sells DOCSIS cable modems and other customer premises equipment to service providers.
