Major League Baseball will throw out the first pitch on its 2010 season with the defending champion New York Yankees visiting their nemesis the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on April 4.
New York captain Derek Jeter will likely be the first man to step to the plate, when ESPN2 begins its coverage at 8 p.m. (ET), which will mark the fifth time in the past six seasons that the World Series champions will be showcased in the Sunday night season-opener.
The game will mark just the second time the ancient rivals have started an MLB season as the stand-alone contest: the clubs met in 2005 when the Bosox were defending the 2004 World Series title, their first crown since 1918.
The contest is the 30th time the Yankees and Red Sox have started a season against each other, with the Bronx Bombers holding an 18-10-1 edge. The teams have not begun a season against one another since at Fenway since 1985.
As the start of ESPN's 21st season with MLB, the game will also be aired on ESPN Radio, broadband service ESPN360.com and ESPN Mobile.
